Autumn 1 2023
Let us love not just with our words but also with our actions and in truth.
John 3:18
This half term, our value is Love. We have been thinking especially about our vision: "Let all that you do be done in love" and how this means that love is the golden thread through everything we do. So far, we've looked at St. Martin and how he showed love to help the beggar when he was cold, St Theresa of Lisieux and her words "What matters is not great deeds but great love" and how Jesus displayed love when he helped the paralysed man even though he didn't make the right choices.
English
We have started our new text called Varmints. We were looking at what a Varmint and found out that they are "a troublesome wild animal" so we designed our own Varmint! Take a look at some our amazing (and quite scary) designs!
After this, we were introduced to what a Varmint looked like and we were all shocked!
Next, we began to look at the amazing poem "The Ocean's blanket" by Carol Ann Duffy. In groups, we came up with our own actions for each of the verses and performed it to the whole class. Everyone was very confident and had a part to play in their group.
This week, we listened to the start of the book and we drew what we imagined it looked like at the start...
But then the others came and the mood changed significantly...
Maths
Our first topic this year is all about place value. We have been ordering, comparing and rounding numbers up to 10 milion! Everyone has persevered so much and if anyone has been struggling, their friends in class have definitely shown love in action and taken time to help! Keep up the hard work!
Science
In science, we have been looking at Living things and their habitats. Most recently, we have collaborated in pairs and researched the different types of vertebrates and invertebrates, then we created some amazing double page spreads of our learning!
History
Our question this half term is "What mattered to the Vikings?". We had a viking day where we had a special visitor come in and teach us all about life as a viking! We learnt about punishments, their beliefs and why they were so vicious. We also got to try on a Viking warrior's helmet and hold a sword and shield.
Bookflix
In Year 6 we love reading for pleasure and reading widely. This includes different genres and both fiction and non-fiction: our reading area helps us to do this!
