The Prayer

Garden of Gethsemane

The Gathering

Jesus went to pray in the garden. Sit quietly in a space outside. Imagine you are in the garden with Jesus. Listen to the story:

The Story

That night Jesus went with his friends to an olive grove called the garden of Gethsemane. He went off to pray alone and told three disciples to keep watch.

“Dear father God,” he said, “I do not want to suffer. Yet, let not what I want, but what you want be so.”

When Jesus returned, the disciples had fallen asleep.

Reflection

Jesus wanted more than anything to do what his Father God had wanted.  What lay ahead would be his greatest challenge.  He would soon be surrounded by a violent mob who wanted to arrest him and kill him, though Jesus had done nothing wrong.  So the first thing he did was pray, and God gave him the inner strength he needed by sending an angel.

Sometimes, when things seem too difficult to face, everything in us wants to run away from them.  Jesus showed real courage by first turning to God in prayer.

Prayer

Father God, may I know your power and grace to overcome the challenges in my life. May the things that stand in my way become examples of your limitless power. Help me to know that you are always there to lead and to guide me in all that I do. Amen

Response

Take a stone or a small object, hold it tight.

Think of something that you’re worried about just like Jesus was worried in the garden. Say a prayer and tell God what you are worried about and God will hear it.

Tie the ribbon onto a tree.

Take a piece of ribbon or thread and tie it onto a branch of a tree.

Let it remind you of the angel God sent from heaven to strengthen Jesus.  Pray that God will give you the courage that you need in any challenges you have.

Think about the value courage. Create an image and think about how you have shown courage in a difficult situation. Write a prayer to ask God to help you to be courageous.
