Geography

For our Geography learning we've been exploring the differences between Hyde and a farm. Earlier in the year we had a walk around Hyde, and as most of us live in Hyde we already knew lots about what we could find there but a farm is completely different - as our trip would show us. As part of our research we learnt there are many different types of farms: an arable farm grows plants and crops, a livestock farm keeps animals, a dairy farm has cows for milk and other delicious by-products, and a mixed farm grows crops but also has animals. Farms are a business that keep busy all year round, but different seasons require different jobs, as part of our learning we looked at when the farmers do different jobs and thought about why those jobs happen in that season etc. sheep are sheered in the summer because, like us, they would get very warm if they wore their woolly coats during the hottest time of the year. This wool is used to make clothes and carpets. As we visited the farm in spring, we were lucky to meet lots of baby animals like lambs (baby sheep) and kids (babhy goats), we even had a go feeding the lambs, and they were all very hungry! We met lots of other animals on the farm too, including a horse with a very impressive mustache!

Our trip to the farm gave us a great look at the differences between a farm and Hyde. It helped us to draw our own maps of a farm, using a key to label the different areas, and helped us prepare for our learning showcase, where we bravely shared our learning with the whole school and lots of our grown ups too! Our conclusion was that Hyde and farms are very different because they have different purposes, Hyde is a community where people live, work and go to school, but a farm is a business and therefore doesn't need things like a church, a mosque, a school or restaurants.

Maths

This half term we've been taking a look at fractions and what it means to split something in halves or quarters. We learnt that a half is two equal pieces, it's important for something to be equal for it to be considered a half, whether this be a shape, object or a number. Quarters are made into four equal groups.
