Spring 1 2026
Maths
In our maths this half term, we have continued to look at fractions. We have cememeted our learning on subtracting fractions with different denominators. We have then moved onto looking at multiplying fractions by whole numbers and finding fractions of amounts.
In Maths, we have progresses onto looking at multiplication and division. We have looked at multipling two digits by two digits. We have looked at doing this in three different ways: grid method, expanded form and long multiplication. After we had mastered this, we have moved onto looking at formal methods for division and using the bus stop method. We have looked at divisions that have remainders.
English
In English, we have finished off our assessed piece of writing on Shackleton's Journey and have created a newspaper report on his journey.
We are now moving onto our new book 'The Journey' and we have been introduced to the family of our story and a fond holiday memory.
We have read the story of 'The Journey' and looked at how the mum and children feel at different parts of the story. We have performed drama to help make the story real and help with visualising the story. We have write a diary entry of going through the forest and finding the border. We have written a persuasive letter to the guard to help us cross the border.
Learning Challenge
In our leanring challenge, we have started our new learning challenge looking at the Anglo-Saxons and how their rule changed Britain? We have started this learning by recapping our learning from before Christmas on the Anglo-Saxons. We have introduced Alfred the Great and why people consider him to be 'great'. We have also looked at how Alfred the Great helped to protect the Anglo-Saxons from the Vikings and the creation of Danelaw.
After looking at Danelaw, we have looked at how the Anglo-Saxons converted from Pagans to Christianity. We have looked at some Christian saints and the Gosforth Cross. After this we have looked at law and order during Anglo-Saxon Britian. We looked at who made the laws and how people were punished if the broke the law.
Science
In Science, we have continued our learning on forces. We have looked at water resistance and viscosity. We have looked at this by comparing how quickly an object falls through different liquids. We have also looked at simple machines with a focus on machines with gears, levels and pulleys.
After our unit on forces, we have began looking at Earth and Space. So far we have looked at how the Earth, Moon and Sun all interact with each other and explored what the word orbit means. We have also looked at what causes day and night.
