Year Five

Year Five have settled very well into being the second oldest in the school and are showing that they can handle the extra responsibility that comes with that.

English

In English this half term, we have been consoilating our learning from previous years when looking at grammar and punctuation. We have started to move onto relative clauses and have worked hard to improve our understanding on relative pronouns and when to apply these into our writing. We have been look at the book 'Town is by the sea' in our writing sessions. We have found this very intriguing and have been engrossed in finding out more about coal miners and the effect of coal on the world. 

Maths

In Maths this half term, we started off by looking at place value. We looked at partitioning numbers up to 6 digits, writing the numbers in words and rounding. We then moved onto looking at using our previous knowledge of addition and subtraction onto 6 digit numbers. We are now looking at multiplication and division. We have used our knowledge of times tables to understand factors and multiples and find prime numbers within 20.

Learning challenge

In our learning challenge, we have been looking at the Anglo-Saxons and why they came to Britain. We have looked at the seven kingdoms that they created in Britain and where they came from. We have looked at longboats and created a poster looking at how they were designed, what their purpose was, how many people they could hold and how they moved. We also had a visit from Past productions who taught us about Anglo-Saxon society and runes. They also told us about some Anglo-Saxon myths and allowed us to act out these myths.
