Summer 1 - 2021

This page will be updated regularly during the first half of the summer term. Please do check back for updates.

The whole school value for this half-term is Justice. In our classroom we have chosen some activities to help us reflect on what justice means and how we can show it in practice.

Class Worship

We based our Class Worship on James 2: 1 - 4 which says...

'My friends, if you have faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, you won't treat some people better than others. Suppose a rich person wearing fancy clothes and a gold ring comes to one of your meetings. And suppose a poor person dressed in worn-out clothes also comes. You must not give the best seat to the one in fancy clothes and tell the one who is poor to stand at the side or sit on the floor. That is the same as saying that some people are better than others, and you would be acting like a crooked judge.'

We created our own drama based on this.

The song we chose was The Song of Kingdom Come. The words talk about having a voice to be corageous advocates and stand up for justice.

The prayer we used was:

Leader: Father God, some people are really rich and some are not.

All: Help me to show respect and friendship to everyone.

Leader: Some people are fantastic at maths and some are not,

All: Help me to show respect and friendship to everyone.

Leader: Some people are brilliant at sport and some are not,

All: Help me to show respect and friendship to everyone.

Leader: Some people are like me and others are not,

All: Help me to show respect and friendship to everyone.

In English we are reading The Barnabus Project which is about a half-mouse, half-elephant called Barnabus who is a failed ‘perfect pet’. Will he find freedom from the lab where he lives? We can't wait to find out!

The Barnabus Project

We have created our own ‘perfect pets’ which are hybrids of two different animals.

Next we wrote a set of Project Notes, detailing our pet's name, it's characteristics, it's primary food, the animals it is made from, what habitat it lives in and its handling protocols. Unlike Barnabus, our pet's project statuses were all ‘PASS’.

Mrs Mather made a crochet (amigurumi) Barnabus for our classroom.

In maths we are looking at fractions. We have learned about mixed numbers and improper fractions and how to convert between them. We have learned about equivalent fractions and how to simplify them. Next, we are working on adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators.

Our Wonderful World

We visited our garden in the eco area to see how the bulbs we had planted in the Autumn had grown. It is amazing what grows from a very uninteresting bulb in God's wonderful world!

Look what we discovered inside the wall outside Year 6's classroom! There are at least three chicks in the nest which make a lot of noise. By watching the wall carefully from a distance, we have discovered that mum and dad are a pair of Great tits. We have shown our responsibility for protecting God's creatures by making sure everyone keeps their distance from the nest so we don't frighten them.

This half-term, PE is on Wednesday and Friday afternoons. Our Wednesday session is with Sport's coach, Mike.

We are also working on getting fitter by trying to beat our lap count in the 10 minute daily mile.

We really love our art lessons with Mrs Taylor. This half-term we have started looking at boats. We looked at photographs as well as some artwork, examining what features we liked about the pictures. Next, we experimented with drawing our own boats and with colours and textures to be used in our own piece of artwork.

As well as the boats that go on the water, we have also been looking at the water itself.

We started to experiment with different materials to create images, patterns and textures of water. It was amazing how many different colours, shades and textures we could see when we looked at other artist's work.

Learning Heroes

Well done to all of our Learning Heroes!

Superhero Day

Superhero day on Wednesday 28th April celebrated all superheroes, both fictional and real. We dressed up as our favourites, including Ironman, Sonic, doctors and nurses, teachers and everyday ordinary heroes.

Year 6 Class Treat

We have been working hard in our learning to earn counters in class. At the end of last half-term we filled our counter pot! As our treat, we chose to have some extra play. It was great fun being outside, enjoying the lovely warm sun and spending quality time with our friends after having spent so much time apart during lockdown.

Class Story - The Ickabog

As our end of day story, Mrs Mather is reading The Ickabog by J. K. Rowling. We have discovered that some of the characters are not very good at putting St George's school values into practice!

Zones of Regulation

We are continuing to explore the Zones of Regulation. We added pictures of different emotions to our zones wall to help us identify which zone we, or our friends are in.

We then started to look at the different feelings associated with each zone and what we can do to help us, or our friends to move to, or stay in the green zone.

Mrs McKeown helped us with our Zones of Regulation by teaching us some breathing techniques to give us another stratergy for moving from the yellow zone back to the green zone. We learned how to do the 'silent O' and 'box breathing' techniques.

Eid Mubarak!

As a whole school we joined in with our Muslim friends to celebrate Eid which comes at the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting. We had a non-uniform day with some wearing their Eid clothing and each gave £1 which will be donated to charity.

In RE we have been thinking about who Jesus is. We considered the following questions...

  • Who did Jesus say he was?
  • Who is Jesus (now)?
  • Who was Jesus (past)?
  • Was Jesus the Messiah?

Click here to see some of our responses to these questions.

As part of our science topic looking at evolution, we have been learning about Galápagos finches and their beak adaptations. We did an experiment to test out different 'beaks' (tweezers etc.) to see how many 'worms' (macaroni) each could pick up in 10 seconds.
